Guyana Airways 2000's (GA 2000) flight to Toronto, Canada on Monday was rescheduled as a result of a computer component failure and passengers will now leave tomorrow at 1530 hrs.

The approximately 50 passengers had already boarded the aircraft for the 1530 hrs flight when the problem was discovered. After sitting in the aircraft for about 45 minutes, they were asked to disembark at around 1615 hrs.

The flight was not rescheduled until around 2000 hrs when the problem was identified and it was realised that the part had to be flown in from the United States.

Stabroek News learnt that the part arrived on board the North American Airways flight from the US yesterday morning and was replaced. The aircraft then left at 1000 hrs, one and half hours late, for its scheduled flight to New York.

Passengers were informed that the flight was cancelled and they would not be able to travel to Canada until tomorrow, the next scheduled date for a flight to that destination.

A statement from Public Communications Consultants Limited said arrangements were made for all passengers to return to their homes, including Berbice and Essequibo.

According to the statement, passengers were provided with the in-flight dinner while they waited in the departure lounge.

A local group, Aviation Investments, owns 51 percent of GA 2000. Government owns 49 percent. GA 2000 had its inaugural flight to New York on July 9, after encountering some hiccups.

This is the second time the new airline has experienced a major delay in its service. On September 3, it was delayed for 16 hours at Toronto when a flaw was discovered with its windscreen. The windscreen had to be replaced. (Desiree Jodah)
