Government has allocated a house lot at Belfield, East Coast Demerara to a survivor of the recent Buxton tragedy in its effort to assist those displaced due to the destruction of the family home.
Avril Herod, a victim of the murder/arson/suicide, in which she lost two of her four children received a land allocation letter from Minister of Housing and Water Shaik Baksh at his Homestretch Avenue Office yesterday.
A commitment of $700,000 to $1 million to aid in the construction effort was given by Buxton native and Ministerial Adviser on Empowerment, Odinga Lumumba, on behalf of Toronto-based Guyanese Charles McRae, also a former resident of the village who pledged to rebuild the family home.
Herod, expressing her appreciation to the government, said that she was surprised to be receiving the land. She expressed thanks to those who had contributed and continue to contribute to the rehabilitation efforts.
She said that at present lodging was being offered to her by a family friend. Her other two children and Jermaine Herod, who was orphaned when his father Raul Herod slaughtered the other family members, set their house on fire and killed himself, are residing with relatives in Buxton.
