A Barbadian jurist is being tipped to take-over from Sir Alister McIntyre when he steps down later this year as the UN Good Officer in the border controversy.
Stabroek News understands that Oliver Jackman, a Cambridge- educated Barbadian jurist is likely to be acceptable to both Guyana and Venezuela to assist them in finding a mutually acceptable settlement of the border controversy resulting from Venezuela's claims that the 1899 Arbitral Award is null and void.
Informed sources said that Jackman's name surfaced during discussions last month when representatives of the two governments met in New York at the opening session of the United Nations General Assembly. Jackman is now a member of the Inter American Court of Human Rights and former permanent representative of Barbados, to the United Nations. United Nations officials to whom Stabroek News spoke have explained that it was for the two governments to decide on their choice for the office.
