The preliminary inquiry (PI) into the America street cambio robbery got underway yesterday before Chief Magistrate Paul Fung-A-Fat with Deodat Singh, owner of the robbed cambio, taking the stand.

Clyde Atwell and Toyin Anderson, two of the four persons accused of pulling off the daring heist, are on two counts of robbery under arms and five counts of attempted murder.

Attorney-at-law Khemraj Ramjattan, who is prosecuting the case, informed the court that the state would be proceeding in the PI of the robbery under arms charge. He also indicated that although he had a total of 40 witnesses to call, he would only be taking the evidence of 11.

Attorneys-at-law Basil Williams and Joseph Harmon, representing Atwell and Anderson respectively, again applied for bail. The magistrate once more denied the requests.

The two accused along with Linden London, called `Blackie', and Andrew Peter Douglas, for whom arrest warrants were issued, are all accused of pulling off a daring daylight robbery on D. Singh and Sons Cambio and another businessman on September 22.

Almost $5 million in local currencies and a similar sum in foreign currencies were reportedly taken by the robbers who also shot five persons in the process. The men used a hail of gunfire to cover their escape through the streets of Georgetown.

The PI continues today.
