A 16-year-old who pleaded guilty to a charge of robbery with violence was yesterday ordered detained for two years at Onderneeming by Chief Magistrate Paul Fung-A-Fat and to receive six strokes.
The juvenile was alleged to have robbed Ranika Andrews of two gold chains valued $21,000 on November 30.
According to court prosecutor, Inspector Faye Bremner, on the day in question the virtual complainant (VC) was proceeding along Brickdam with a friend on her way from classes.
It was further stated that the defendant walked up behind Andrews, sprayed a substance in her face, and snatched the chains from around her neck.
Public-spirited citizens giving chase after an alarm was raised held the youth with the items. He was subsequently handed over to the police who brought the charge.
According to the Chief Magistrate, three lashes are to be administered on his entering at the New Opportunity Corps at Onderneeming, Essequibo, and the rest upon his leaving.
