The Guyana Is First group is calling on Guyanese to support their neighbours in Venezuela which was hit by one of the most serious bouts of flash flooding in its recent history.
Speaking at the Venezuelan Embassy on Friday, Chairman of the group, Dr Frank Beckles, said that they were meeting at the Embassy on the 169th anniversary of the death of Simon Bolivar, the founder of Venezuela, but noted that they were not there to commemorate the death of the great man but to launch an appeal to Guyanese to reach out to their neighbours who are suffering. Thousands are said to be homeless.
Also present with Dr Beckles were two other members of the group, Cathy Hughes and Andrew Mendes and they both described the situation in the flood-hit areas as horrendous. Persons who wish to make donations, can give cash or items such as rice, flour, salted fish, sugar, diapers, mosquito nets, rubber boots, milk powder, chain saws, tarpaulins and plywood.
Venezuelan Ambassador to Guyana, Hector Azocar expressed appreciation to the Guyanese public on behalf of his country.
Persons who wish to make donations can do so at the Venezuelan Institute located at 220 Camp Street, between New Market and Lamaha streets or they can contact telephone numbers, 61593, 61543 or 66749.
