A consignment of medical supplies worth some $150,000 destined for flooding and mudslide victims in neighbouring Venezuelan was yesterday presented to that country's Ambassador to Guyana, Hector Azocar by Pharmagen Enterprises and MediCare Pharmacy.
The brief ceremony which took place at the Venezuelan Cultural Centre on Camp Street saw the donation of vitamins, antibiotics, oral rehydration salts and other medicines to treat gastroenteritis and intestinal diseases.
Following the ceremony Stabroek News solicited a comment from representative of Pharmagen Rosana Narine who stated that the gesture is aimed at in some small way relieving the suffering of Venezuelans.
Azocar stated that the gifts demonstrated the closeness of the relations existing between the two nations despite the ongoing border controversy.
He noted that a national committee was coordinating the collection and distribution of aid from various quarters.
The ambassador added that the country's army and the United States Southern Command were presently ensuring that supplies reached the worst affected areas.
