THE Probation and Family Welfare Department of the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security is organising programmes for the rehabilitation of prisoners.

Minister within the Ministry, Ms Bibi Shadick made the disclosure during an appearance on the Government Information Agency (GINA) weekly television programme ‘Answers’.

She said the rehabilitative projects, aimed at preparing the inmates for their return to society, will begin at Mazaruni and Georgetown prisons and continue at prisons countrywide.

Shadick said her Ministry will also join with Home Affairs to assist deportees who are in need of social assistance, to ensure they have enough help to earn a living.

She spoke, too, of combined efforts with the Ministry of Health to look at improving the system of births registration, which has been in state of disarray for sometime.

According to Shadick, there are numerous Guyanese children whose dates of birth have not been registered and, as a result, have no certificates. Consequently, a nationwide campaign has been embarked upon to update the process.

It would entail accessing records of births and late registration of children and, in some cases, adults.

The Human Services Ministry will collaborate with the Education Ministry, as well, to provide assistance, in the form of foodstuff and clothing, to persons in difficult circumstances.

Shadick said that is in keeping with plans for feeding in schools and provision of uniforms for those in attendance.
