MASHRAMANI celebrations this year under the theme `Colourful and True in 2002' culminated with a massive float parade and costume display in New Amsterdam, Berbice, on Sunday afternoon.

The traditional finale to the national celebrations in this main Berbice town once again attracted thousands from around the country, some of whom began arriving in the township several days before.

The momentum began picking up Friday when sellers and revellers started occupying places on the main thoroughfare for their stalls and musical sets.

By Saturday night the main street where most of the action was concentrated was humming with activities.

At about 13:00 hrs Sunday, the colourful displays of creativity featuring various aspects of national life portrayed by enthusiastic Guyanese left their assembly point at Tacama Turn, another place in the town, accompanied by music `sound' systems.

Thousands lined the two-and-a-half mile stretch to view the display which some onlookers described as the largest, the best organised and the most gratifying Mash finals in Berbice in recent years.

Five floats and five musical sets were on the march, with Western Union and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports putting on the largest contingents.

The Western Union presentation depicting `Excellence in service worldwide', displayed the flags of a number of countries while the ministry's representation depicted unity in diversity.

Other floats came from the National Psychiatric Hospital, Fort Canje, also in Berbice, Guyana Stores and the New Amsterdam Town Council.

The revellery continued several hours after the march ended, on the lawns of the New Amsterdam Technical Institute and other sections of the town.

Early yesterday morning efforts were made to remove all encumbrances from the roadside and return the municipality to normalcy. (CALVIN MARSHALL)
