FOUR local business associations yesterday announced they have formed an alliance to further promote Guyana abroad as a place for trade and investment.

Those in the alliance are the Forest Products Association (FPA), the Guyana Manufacturers Association (GMA), the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) and the National Association of Regional Chambers of Commerce of Guyana (ARCC).

In a press release, the groups said they intend to "undertake sustained private-sector initiatives aimed at widespread promotion in foreign markets of trade and investment opportunities in Guyana."

The alliance is an outgrowth of the ARCC's recent business-to-business development mission to Brazil, they said.

ARCC recently led 70 firms from its nine member chambers to Boa Vista and Manaus to explore at first hand new relationships with Brazilian business counterparts.

"FPA, GMA, THAG, and ARCC have also been exploring business development possibilities related to the Government of Brazil's initiative of constructing a bridge across the border Takutu River between Guyana and Brazil.

"The bridge is seen by Guyana associations as a momentum-building drive to bring commercial viability to the Bon Fim-Lethem-Linden road", the associations stated.

They added that the Brazil Government has announced that it has the funding and is committed to building a competitive highway through Guyana.

"It intends to continue efforts to cooperate with Guyana in completing the road project, which will open new markets and opportunities for both countries and which can provide many new spin-off job opportunities", the groups said.

The four believe that other markets offer additional business-to-business opportunities not only like, but also related to, those the ARCC member firms found in Brazil.
