Caribbean Media Corporation dismisses bulk of staff
Notices informing the employees were being received over the past two days by the workers who were originally placed on temporary employment for three months by the dramatic closure on January 4 of the CMC for a restructured operation that was to be back in operation this month.
But a combination of problems, including failure by Caribbean Community (CARICOM) governments to come forward with even limited financial assistance pending preparation of a new business plan and revamping of the operations of the CMC with the assistance of a UNESCO expert, have made it difficult to avoid the retrenchment.
Workers have been advised to check with the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) for entitled benefits while the CMC seeks to honour other obligations to them.
The latest development at the CMC and the whole future of the regional institution will be discussed at a meeting of the Corporation's Board of Directors scheduled for tomorrow in Barbados. (RICKEY SINGH)
