Paradise identified for football facility
By Steve Ninvalle
The Guyana Football Federation has identified a 15-acre plot of land at Paradise, East Coast Demerara for the construction of its football training centre which will be funded under the FIFA Goal Programme. On Tuesday FIFA approved Guyana's application for funding, paving the way for the construction of the training centre here. However, FIFA would not be disbursing any of the US$400,000 allotted for the project until government gives written confirmation that the land will be made available. At a press conference held at the GFF headquarters yesterday, GFF president Colin Klass declared that all documents requested by government have been forwarded to the relevant authorities since February 12 and the federation is now awaiting word on its approval for the Paradise plot. "Based on the request made by the Ministry of Sport we have now furnished the necessary government agency with all the documents. We are expecting that, with all the other angles covered, we will have that (land issue) approved so that we can activate this project and have it realised before the end of the year. "It is no longer a myth. It is now a reality as far as FIFA's assistance is concerned. It is available to us and we need to take control of that," Klass said. Klass said that FIFA has set May for the scheduled commencement of construction. "FIFA has done its part. Guyana now has to take up the mantle and score the goal." Guyana is among six countries from CONCACAF that were approved on Tuesday, for Goal funding. Aruba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana and the Netherlands Antilles are the others. Klass said that FIFA has advised by way of communique that any additional expense will have to be borne by the GFF through the US$250,000 yearly FIFA grant. "We are all optimistic that good judgement will prevail and all will get on board. Before we were dealing without documentation that we probably should have acquired up front. Now we have documents that confirm that Guyana has now been approved. It is for us now to put everything else behind us and collectively move forward for the development of football and our country." The training centre comprises two fields, a changing room, dormitory, dining room, kitchen, classrooms and stands and a security fence.Architect Rawle Jordon, of Rawle Jordon Associates said that in the interim, the training centre will include a running track but not a rubberised one since the budget would not permit such. (In tomorrow's issue Jordon's assessment of the site will be published).
