The Regional Democratic Council of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) is to launch a full investigation into the apparent increase in employment of Amerindian girls in night spots on the Essequibo Coast.

Councillor Lloyd Pereira who heads the Hinterland Affairs Committee expressed concern about the issue at a RDC statutory meeting on Tuesday.

He claimed that many of the proprietors enticed the girls from the Amerindian villages under the pretext that they would be employed as household aides, but they ended up entertaining male customers who frequented certain bars, living under depressed conditions with minimal pay.

Pereira queried whether the girls were covered by the National Insurance Scheme and the council agreed that a full investigation would be launched into the matter.
