In three of the cases persons have been charged and are before the court for murder, legal advice is being sought in three others, while three remain unsolved.
Shortly after dusk on November 24 last 25-year-old Shabodeen Kassim was shot by one of two armed bandits who invaded his parents' business premises at Vryheid Village, West Canje, Berbice demanding money. He died at the New Amsterdam Hospital some three hours after being taken there. One week after the brutal shooting two men were held by the police but were subsequently placed on $25,000 station bail. A few days later the police held five identification parades involving approximately 50 individuals but none of those on the parade were fingered for the crime. Stabroek News understands that a suspect might have escaped apprehension because of a fearful relative. "B" Division Commander, Assistant Commissioner Paul Slowe earlier this week confirmed that the high profile murder was still engaging the attention of investigators.
In the early morning hours of January 17, the charred remains of four persons who had occupied two farm camps aback of Crabwood Creek were discovered. Two men, including a Canada-based Guyanese, were held for several days by the police at Springlands in connection with the discovery but were eventually released. Slowe however indicated that the case was reviewed on the request of the relatives of the deceased by a team of investigators from Eve Leary. According to Slowe, he understands that the file should have been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice. Those who perished in the fire were 15-year-old Shailendra Rajpaul, 55-year-old Outar Narine, 37-year-old Kumar Nandkumar and 53-year-old Thakurdeen Jagmohan.
On the evening of January 24, 52-year-old Dukestown, Corriverton resident Edward Fanfair was reportedly shot and killed by a Guyana National Co-operative Bank (GNCB) guard at Parsram's Filling Station at Corriverton.
According to the Commander, the investigations into this incident have been completed and the file was sent to the DPP for advice. In February 70-year-old Bhoj Bisnauth was discovered dead, gagged and tied at his Guava Bush, Albion home. To date no one has been charged in connection with the murder of this businessman.
On February 24, 29-year-old East Bank Berbice farmer and snackette operator, Sewchand Sahadeo was stabbed to death with a pitchfork at Mara by another farmer. Arnie Nicholson has been charged with the murder and is awaiting trial.
However, the brutal stabbing to death of US-based Guyanese Paul Hardeo continues to baffle investigators. The 45-year-old man was found dead in his mother's Alness home last month shortly after arriving in the country, reportedly at her invitation. According to the mother, her son was killed by four bandits who invaded her home. Hardeo's mother and her maid were detained by the police in connection with the murder but were subsequently released. According to Slowe, the information at the Division's disposal has been sent to the DPP's office for advice. Hardeo had reportedly expressed fears for his life prior to leaving his home and family in New York.
Charges have already been laid in the fatal stabbing of 31-year-old Shawn Britton of Hopetown, West Coast Berbice on March 3, at the New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI) during an after-Mash revelry. Sheldon Adams of North East La Penitence, Georgetown has been charged with murder and will return to court on April 24. Clint Thomas has also been charged with the murder of Jason Joseph of Vryman's Erven, New Amsterdam two Saturdays ago. Joseph was chopped about his upper body at a popular East Canje nightclub on March 23.
Meanwhile, the police have also sought legal advice in relation to a freak accident which resulted in the death of a 72-year-old hire car driver on March 7 on the East Coast Berbice highway. Walter Naroo died in his car after it was hit by a police vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. The police vehicle which was transporting police ranks and three females, including two teachers, suffered a tyre blow-out and swerved into the path of the hire car. Officer-in-charge of Traffic, Fred Semple said the file was sent to the DPP's office two weeks ago for advice.
