Twelve young ladies will vie for the Miss Guyana/World 2002 crown on September 7, at the National Cultural Centre.
One of the coordinators, Andrea McAdam, told this newspaper on Tuesday that the 12 had been short-listed from 20 applicants.
The reigning Miss Guyana/World is Olive Gopaul and Ken Cheong of England holds the franchise. The Miss World contest will be held in November in Nigeria.
McAdam said that at least one of the 12 was a delegate in the Miss Guyana/Universe Pageant earlier this year.
The girls would be introduced to the public in the next three weeks after the organisers would have had time to work with them. "All the girls who have been selected are very qualified, some of them are University of Guyana (UG) graduates while others are attending UG," McAdam said.
The 12 have been selected from different parts of the country including, Pomeroon, Linden, Mahaicony, Bachelor’s Adventure, Leonora, Happy Acres and Georgetown.
The initial introduction of the girls to the media and the potential sponsors is expected to be held on the first Saturday in July and the sashing ceremony on the third Saturday of the same month. A fashion show called `Made in Guyana’ is also planned, where the contestants would model the clothes of the local designers.
McAdam said that sponsors had been secured, adding that they would have the option of selecting the designer of their choice for their contestant.
According to McAdam there will also be a talent competition, which will be open to the media and special invitees and the delegates who cop the first three places will perform on the night. She said that this will in no way impact on the final score since at the Miss World contest the talent show is a separate show and is not added to the final score.
McAdam said that, just like in the Miss World Pageant, there would be no swimsuit segment on the night of the pageant. Instead, the girls would be filmed in their swimwear on a few resorts in Guyana and this would be aired on national television where the public would be afforded the opportunity to vote for the winner. That programme will be called `Guyana you decide’ and each of the girls will be given separate telephone numbers for persons to call and vote for them.
The points scored here will account for a small percentage of the final score on the night.
The evening gown segment will also be pre-judged and the final five selected before the night of the pageant and announced then. The winner will be decided from the intelligence segment, which will take place on the night of the contest.
