MARK Benschop, for whom an arrest warrant was issued on Tuesday in connection with his alleged involvement in the July 3 events, remained in Police custody up to late yesterday after making a Court appearance and being granted bail.

Target Special Squad (TSS) Police apprehended him and took him to Force Headquarters, Eve Leary, after he had secured his pre-trial liberty on a $35,000 grant by Acting Chief Magistrate Juliet Holder-Allen.

Before her shortly after 09:00 hrs, he faced charges of forcible entry and riotous damage to property at the Presidential Complex in New Garden Street as well as participation in an illegal procession that culminated in last Wednesday's attack on the Office of the President (OP).

Benschop, of Lot 90 Laluni Street, Queenstown, also in Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to taking part in an unlawful march without permission from the Commissioner of Police but he was not required to plead to the indictable charges of forcible entry into the Accounts Department of OP and riotously damaging State property there.

Later, about 10:30 hrs, Benschop was held and taken to Eve Leary in company of attorney-at-law, Mr. Mortimer Coddette.

Earlier, another lawyer, Mr. Basil Williams, who made the bail application for Benschop, said the latter is a journalist and father who has no previous convictions.

The lawyer said Benschop had already suffered by having his name published in newspapers and on the television as a wanted fugitive.

One more legal counsel, Mr. Raphael Trotman told Mrs. Holder-Allen that Benschop would be nabbed when he left the courtroom.

However, still in Court, Mrs. Maria Benschop declared that her husband is "a good man and exemplary father".

Nineteen more persons were charged, too, on Wednesday, with offences related to the storming of the Presidential Secretariat and are free until July 29 when their cases and Benschop's will be called again.
