In a Press release, after a general members meeting Sunday, at its Congress Place, Sophia, Georgetown headquarters, it noted recent statements by civic organisations and expressed its intent to be responsive to any such approach which holds out some hope of addressing and resolving the national problems.
PNC/R said the Sunday caucus referred to the party’s submission on constitutional reform, more particularly its proposals contained on page 17 and restated the position that, in view of the inadequacies of the present system and practices of governance, it would be prepared to explore forms of inclusive governance which it feels can be of benefit to the Guyanese people.
The release said the gathering also asserted that the governing People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), in its moment of desperation, is attempting to target PNC/R leaders.
The conference resolved that PNC/R would stand firmly behind its leaders and members and provide adequate protection and representation in the face of any untoward attempts by the PPP/C.
“Acts of aggression against its membership will not be tolerated,” the release warned.
PNC/R also reaffirmed its commitment to multi-culturalism and to eschew any from of racism and said it stands ready to deal with any of its members who seek to perpetrate acts against any ethnic group, including attempts to perpetrate criminal activities under the cover of legitimate protest.
In that regard, PNC/R said the assemblage instructed that the party should, in future, avoid any tactical blunders in its organisation of protests and demonstrations.
However, the party would not abandon militant protest as a legitimate form of political action so long as the situation warrants it and the PPP/C remains intransigent, the statement said.
The assembly concluded, as well, that there is strength in unity and the “invincible PNC/R would move forward in unity”.
The release said the Sunday congregation was convened “in the wake of recent events and in view of the rapidly deteriorating economic, political and social conditions in the country.
In attendance were members from the 10 Administrative Regions of Guyana and the party and they were addressed by the Party Chairman (Mr Robert Corbin) and the Leader (Mr Desmond Hoyte), who engaged the members in a discussion and analysis of the current situation and the way forward.
“Coming out of those discussions, it was reaffirmed that, in the face of its adversaries, party loyalty is of paramount importance and that, on matters of party policy, there shall be one position as decided by the relevant forum and articulated by the official or authorised spokesperson of the party,” the statement said.
“It was also decided that the party has to maintain its resolute stance in the face of PPP/C intransigence on matters of governance and in relation to the implementation of constitutional reform and decisions of the dialogue process,” the statement disclosed.
