At a post-Congress reception Monday evening, the President said: "The Congress focused on many issues that are important to Guyana. We came back in many ways to a path of building a prosperous country by solving the problems and most of all, we will do all of this as a united party."
Dismissing allegations of disunity within the PPP as rumours, the President said the party is resolute in its cause.
"Many people had concerns about our unity as a party. We never had those concerns within. But they had more concerns than us.
"I suspect that these concerns were never based on good feelings for the PPP, but many of them because of hatred of the PPP and they would have wanted to see a disintegration of the party or trouble among the leadership of the party. They did not succeed, we came out as a strong, united party," the President observed.
He also rebutted claims of undemocratic practices within the party by some sections of society and the media.
"We had democracy, debated motions and so on. In today's (Monday's) papers they said a motion submitted by a particular group did not make it to the floor up to press time, yet they have information on an activity, which took place Sunday afternoon, and that event took place Saturday night. It is all designed once again to help a particular image of the party...that we did not allow democratic expression," the President charged.
He urged party members at the reception to embrace the democratic principles of the party as it still has many well-wishers both in the media and the society at large, appealing to them work closer with all groups within Guyana, including religious, civil society and youth bodies.
"The key thing is that we came out a very strong party," bent on development via the plans laid out in the PPP/C manifesto on which the last elections campaign were conducted, he said.
"It comprehensively speaks about economic and social developments, civil and constitutional rights of people, the rule of law, the judiciary, young people, women and older people. I urge that people have a stronger look at our programmes and then they would understand the true nature of this party," exhorted the President.
He said he is pleased with the outcome of the Congress, despite the shooting to death of party activist, Balram Khandai by bandits last Sunday night at Rose Hall town. - (GOVERNMENT INFORMATION AGENCY)
