THE countdown to the Miss Guyana World 2002 pageant is well on its way, with the delegates up for the final aspect of the pre-judging competition this evening.

The segment will determine the five finalists for the Saturday night finals.

On Tuesday evening, the delegates were given sashes representing their sponsors at the Regency Suites, Hadfield Street, Georgetown.

A handful of this year's sponsors are overseas based, and as a result, reigning queen, Miss Olive Gopaul, sashed most of the delegates on the sponsors' behalf.

Just after 20:00 hrs Tuesday, the delegates were in the studios of GTV 11 for the `Guyana U Decide' show.

Artistic Director and Coordinator of the pageant, Mr. Derek Moore produced a video montage of the delegates at the Splashmin's, Baracara and Baganara resorts. His production was nothing short of a masterpiece.

TAKING the votes: telephone operators at the GTV 11 studios Tuesday evening for the `Guyana U Decide' show.
For each of the delegates, a telephone number appeared on screen, and members of the public were allowed to call in and vote for the contestant of their choice.

The votes, along with the results of the online voting, which continues at http://www.Miss-Guyana.org/, will make up a percentage of the scores that will determine which five contestants go for the crown.

Yesterday, the delegates each received hampers from Langston Roach Industries of Trinidad and Tobago, makers of Soft N' Silky personal care products.

The company will also award a year's supply of Soft N' Silky products to the contestant adjudged Miss Best Skin and Hair.

This evening, there will be the evening gown and interview competition, where the delegates will be pre-judged for the selection of the final five.

Online voters have placed Ryiela Gaffar as their choice for Miss Guyana and Miss Congeniality. Marceline Basdeo comes second for Miss Guyana, and third for Miss Congeniality.

Marita Persaud is third for Miss Guyana and second for Miss Congenialty. - (NEIL MARKS)
