Buxton, on the East Coast of Demerara has been the recipient of several developmental projects in all the social sectors.
Records show that the village is benefiting from Educational, Health, Water and Infrastructural projects.
In 1997, Government allocated $12M for the rehabilitation and extension of the Company Path Primary School. The Buxton Primary School was also rehabilitated in 1998 at a cost of $2.9M. Also, in the education sector, the Buxton/Friendship Primary School was constructed at a cost of $80M.
Under the Social Impact Amelioration Programme (SIMAP), the extension of the water supply in Buxton was completed at a cost of $18.7M in 1998. During 1998, the Buxton/Foulis Community Centre was rehabilitated at a cost of $11.6M.
For road works, the Buxton/Friendship Middle Street was rehabilitated at a cost of $1.2M. In 2001, approximately $12.2M was spent on the rehabilitation of Roger Harper Street; the construction of Middle Street, Friendship; the construction of revetments at Bamboo Dam, Wilken Street Company Path; the rehabilitation of the Buxton Primary School; the rehabilitation of schools and roads in the area.
Drainage and irrigation works carried out in the area in 2001 by the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) amounted to $18.8M. These works included the construction of a heavy-duty bridge at Pond Dam; the rehabilitation of the Bamboo Dam Koker revetment; digging of 90 rods of drains in Bobb Street; digging of access drains throughout Buxton; weeding and cleaning of trenches; cutting all trees except mango trees on the Buxton Sideline Dam; the construction of several culverts in the village; and the excavation of the main drainage canals.
Sea defence works were carried out by the Ministry of Public Works on the Buxton sea defence in 2001 and in 2002 at a cost of $6M. A contract was awarded by Cabinet amounting to $25M for additional sea defence works in 2002.
In the field of agricultural development, Buxton received $20M in the 2001 Budget presentation.
The Regional Democratic Council (RDC), in the 2002 Budget presentation in Parliament allocated a significant sum for development works in Buxton. This sum catered for the rehabilitation of the Buxton Primary School; the rehabilitation of the Buxton Community High School; the rehabilitation of the Buxton Health Centre; the construction of a Practical Instruction Centre in Buxton/Friendship; the construction of revetment at Company Path and the Buxton Main Road.
Earlier this year, Government also allocated $19.3M for road repairs in the Buxton/Foulis area.
