THE one-week strike by the National Association of Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE) in the sugar industry has been called off following the intervention of the Ministry of Labour, Human Resources and Social Security.

Chief Labour Officer, Mr. Mohamed Akeel yesterday told the Chronicle that following representation to his department, a decision was taken to refer the industrial dispute to arbitration and NAACIE has called off the strike.

The strike was in support of the union's call to have an outstanding wages dispute with the Guyana Sugar Corporation for 2001 settled though arbitration.

NAACIE had written Akeel indicating that it will prolong the strike and would not prevent other workers from giving solidarity.
