A HIGH level Chinese business delegation from the province of Fujin is here on a four-day visit to explore trade and investment opportunities, mainly in the forestry and fisheries sectors.

Head of the delegation He Shaochuan is Vice-Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference of the Fujin Committee.

Speaking to the 'Chronicle' earlier this week, Mr. Shaochuan identified several reasons for choosing Guyana. One is Guyana's strategic geographical position as a gateway to South American markets. Other reasons include Guyana's importance in the Caribbean region; the existing economic and trade cooperation, which could promote development in both countries; and the abundance of natural resources that Guyana has, especially in the forestry and fisheries sectors, he said.

Shaochuan pointed out that Fujin also has similar natural resources. He noted too that Guyana and China share a long history of a friendly relationship and expressed the view that his delegation is looking forward to deepening that relationship by seeking greater opportunities in economic and trade ties.

Guyana and Fujin can benefit mutually from deeper cooperation in economic and trade ventures, he said, and observed that new opportunities can be found for cooperation in fields apart from the forestry and fisheries sectors and that close cooperation will strengthen the bonds of friendship between the two countries.

Shaochuan stated that prior to coming to Guyana, he and the other members of the delegation had a perception of a hardworking and friendly people and a country with profound natural resources.

So far, he said, the delegation has found their perception to be right. He also said they have been impressed with the warmth of the Government and the people. He noted also the support being given by the Guyana Government to the international policies of China.

During their stay here, the Chinese visitors will tour business and agencies including Precision Woodworking, Pritipaul's Investments Limited, Sanata Textiles Limited and the National Agriculture Research Institute (NARI).

They will also hold discussions with members of the Guyana Forestry Commission and Chief Executive Officer of Go-Invest, Mr. Geoff Da Silva as well as representatives of the business community.

Minister of Fisheries, Crops and Livestock, Mr. Satyadeow Sawh told the 'Chronicle' that the visit by the Chinese delegation represents a renewing of the bonds of friendship between China and Guyana and opens up the opportunity for the pursuit of new economic ventures, whether jointly or through direct investments by Chinese businessmen.

Sawh also expressed his gratitude to the Chinese Ambassador to Guyana Mr. Song Tao for facilitating the visit of the business delegation from Fujin, China. (CHAMANLALL NAIPAUL)
