THE Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport yesterday refuted the statement by World Boxing Association Super Lightweight champion ‘Vicious’ Vivian Harris that he was returning to his USA base empty-handed.

In a release, the ministry stated: “The ministry wishes to state clearly that the impression created in certain sections of the media by ‘Vicious’ Harris that promises made by the government were not being delivered is contrary to the reality.”

Harris and World Boxing Council Cruiserweight champion Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite will receive a house lot of their choice in a government housing scheme, $5 million cash to build a house or a house worth $5 million and a duty-free concession to import a vehicle.

The ministry disclosed that Harris authorised his brother Sean Harris to assist in identifying the house lot and he would receive a cheque for the money from Guyana’s Consul General in New York, Brentnol Evans, as he requested during his farewell call to President Bharrat Jagdeo on Wednesday, just before leaving the country.

WBC champion Braithwaite will be in Guyana for the remainder of the month and will soon identify his plot and receive the funding from the government.

In an outburst to the media before departing for the airport, Harris said he was leaving without any of the things promised him.
