FORMER World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight champion Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis knocked out journeyman Oscar Delgado in the first round of their welterweight scrap at the Hector Sola Bezares Coliseum in Puerto Rico on Friday night.

It was a one-sided fight with Lewis hammering Delgado with straight rights followed by thudding uppercuts. This is the first fight back for Lewis since his lost his title to Ricardo Mayorga in March.

Lewis used an aggressive attack from the opening bell on. He combined effectively while using his jab to set up his opponent for the right hand. As the first round was coming to an end it was obvious that Delgado was completely overmatched.

‘Sixhead’ landed a right hand to the body that knocked him down to the canvas. Despite Delgado's attempt to recover, he could not beat the count.

The official time called by the announcer was at 3:00 minutes of round number one since the knockout came as the bell was about to sound.

After the fight, Lewis told Fightnews that he felt good about his performance and that he was very anxious to get back to the top. "I'm very happy with the results because I learned from my loss that I should keep myself working hard and staying focused and that is exactly what I came to do tonight."

Although there's no official venue set, Sixhead's team assured that negotiations are under way to have Antonio Margarito as his next opponent for February.

In the main event of the evening, up-and-coming Miguel Cotto improved his record to 13-0 with 10 KOs as he defeated his opponent, tough Mexican Ubaldo Hernandez.

Cotto demonstrated patience and composure during much of the fight by not taking any unnecessary risks against his opponent. Hernandez was game in his efforts against Cotto as he got some good shots during the third and fourth rounds and eventually opening a nick under Miguel's left eye, but Cotto quickly made adjustments, working near the ropes as if to invite his opponent towards him so that he could implement his counter-punch.

Once certain his opponent was softened, Cotto immediately implemented a vicious body attack that sent Hernandez to the canvas on the seventh round.

Former champion Cesar Bazan, who helped Hernandez for preparation, is being mentioned as the next opponent for Miguel Cotto early next year.

In the co-main event of the evening, Ivan ‘Iron Boy’ Calderon used a combination of speed and movement to provide foe Lee Sandoval a boxing lesson. Calderon was very effective in sneaking into Sandoval's guard by stepping inside throwing his combinations and stepping away before his opponent had a chance to answer. Judges Jose Torres and Raul Nieves scored the fight 119-109 in favour of Ivan Calderon while the Judge Carlos Colon saw it 120-108. Fightnews saw the fight as a clean shutout in favour of Calderon, who maintained a boxing style reminiscent of Wilfredo Gomez.

Edwin Algarin defeated Dominican Henry Matos after Matos was unable to continue due to a shoulder injury at 59 seconds of the 4th round.

Daniel Jimenez defeated Rafael Sierra in only 34 seconds. Finally, Ramon Cruz knocked down Ivan Matos in the first round only to find himself on the floor in the second round himself, felled by a right hand. However, a cut on Matos's eyelid forced the doctor to recommend the stoppage. (Fightnews).
