The Guyana Human Rights Association (GHRA) is urging persons who feel concerned about the current national crisis to write brief letters to the newspapers, proposing the solutions which they would like the upcoming congresses of the PPP/C and the PNC/R to note.
The congress of the ruling PPP/C is scheduled for month-end, while the main opposition PNC/R's is slated for mid-August.
The human rights body is proposing that "during the next two weeks, everyone could imagine each had two minutes to address both the PPP and the PNC congresses, then write a short letter to the newspapers proposing a solution you would like the congresses to hear," a GHRA press release said.
The release suggested that the proposals may be the same to both congresses, or they may be separate, and the letters should be a maximum of two short paragraphs, since short letters are more likely to be published than long ones. The GHRA advised too that abusive letters are unlikely to be published.
"Send your letter to the newspaper of your choice, addressed to the Editor, with "A Message To Congress" on the top," the release informed.
The human rights body stated that it had consciously not made any special arrangements with editors of newspapers because letter pages are available for ordinary members of the public to use. However, Stabroek News' editor welcomed the initiative and said the letters would be published once they were kept short.
"They are one obvious platform from which ordinary voices can be heard," GHRA said.
Normally party congresses are the business only of members of the particular party, but because the national crisis is in the hands of the PPP/C and the PNC/R, their business is now everybody's business, the release asserted.
"On this occasion," the release stated, "it would be inexcusable if the future of the nation and how to secure it were not the overriding agenda for both congresses."
