The Guyana Indian Heritage Association is calling for the immediate
termination of the services of Home Affairs Minister Ronald Gajraj in the
wake of the gruesome events that unfolded early Monday morning, as the
PPP/C’s Congress disbanded at Rose Hall, Corentyne.
According to the group, President Jagdeo should take over direct command
of the Ministry of Home Affairs and appoint Brigadier Joe Singh (Retd) as
Special Advisor for Internal Security. The group expressed the hope that
Singh would “agree to contribute his professionalism at this time of
national emergency.”
The group went on to note that “there is a clear ethnic pattern to the
banditry with mostly Indian Guyanese civilians being robbed, beaten and
killed.”
They also expressed fear that the bandits are either replenishing and/or
building up their arsenal in order to increase their attacks.
GIHA has also demanded an inquiry into Monday morning’s events since there
was little police or army intervention in the attack which lasted for
almost two hours.
The group also extended sympathy to the families of those who died during
or as a result of the attack. Two policemen and a teenager were shot dead
and a fourth person died of a heart attack.
