The executive committee of the Working People's Alliance (WPA) has appointed Dr David Hinds to the post of International Secretary.
The opposition party said in a press release on Tuesday that as a "spokesperson for WPA overseas, Dr Hinds' responsibilities include lobbying international organisations, re-establishing the party's contacts with fraternal organisations, representing the party at overseas forums, and servicing the party's overseas membership".
He left the country last week to return to the Arizona State University in the US where he lectures in Caribbean and African American/Black Studies.
The release further said that Dr Hinds will be making regular visits to Guyana for periods of four to six weeks.
Meanwhile, the WPA executive has agreed to extend for a further six months the leave of absence granted to Dr Rupert Roopnaraine, co-leader of the party, who left Guyana on August 26 to return to Cambridge, UK, where he is working on a research project on the writings of the late celebrated national poet, Martin Carter.
Both Hinds and Roopnaraine continue to serve as members of the executive, playing an active role in the WPA's decision-making, and this will also be essential to the process of rebuilding the party, the release added.
