National youth track and field star Randy Lee left Guyana just over one week ago to take up a scholarship at the Archbishop's Carroll High School in Washington, USA.
Lee's local club coach Foster Sampson told Stabroek Sport, the teenager secured a free academic and track and field scholarship and would be exposed to a higher level of competition and better facilities in the US.
Lee is the current national under-15 and under-17, 400 and 800-metre champion, as well as the Caribbean Union of Teachers' (CUT) under-15, 400-metre champion. At the last CUT championships, Lee clocked 49.8 seconds for the 400-metre.
The former Marian Academy third former's personal best times for the 200 and 800 metres are 22.82 and two minutes .03 seconds respectively.
Sampson said the times Lee is returning at the moment for the 200, 400 and 800 metres, many Caribbean stars were not registering when they were his age.
"With better facilities in the US we're hoping for good results coming from him" Foster stated.
Asked if Lee received assistance from the Amateur Athletic Association of Guyana in securing the scholarship, Sampson said the school probably heard or read of his outstanding performance and was probably impressed "so they made contact with us (Atoms)" Sampson pointed out.
"Randy is a very promising athlete and I know he will have better facilities there, but I hope he is available to represent Guyana at next year's junior Carifta Games which is slated for Trinidad over the Easter weekend," Sampson said.
