Brazil to assist in treating Guyanese patients

Guyana and Brazil have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) establishing political consultations between them and the neighbouring country has also agreed to assist in the medical treatment of Guyanese.
These agreements flowed from the visit of Foreign Affairs Minister Rudy Insanally to Brazil between September 30 and October 3.
A release on Friday from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said that besides the MOU, the two countries expressed interest in greater collaboration between their diplomatic academies and noted that an agreement establishing cooperation between the Foreign Service Institute here and the Rio Branco Institute of Brazil is to be concluded shortly.
At the meeting between Insanally and Brazil's Minister of Health, Dr Barjas Negri, agreement was reached to put in place modalities "for the treatment of Guyanese patients with acute medical problems in Brazil under the 1989 Protocol of Intent" between the two countries.
Brasilia has also indicated its willingness to provide technical support to this country in the area of HIV/AIDS. GINA said that Brazil advised that an MOU relating to HIV/AIDS prevention and control is to be concluded shortly with this country. It was also proposed that a tripartite agreement among Guyana, Brazil and India be explored.
During his visit, Insanally also held discussions with his Brazilian counterpart, Ambassador Celso Lafer and Minister of Planning Guilherme Dias. According to the release, Insanally and Lafer discussed a wide range of issues including consular cooperation, collaboration between border communities and security matters, controlling the trafficking of narcotics and illicit activities across the borders, inspection of border markers, interconnection between highways and areas for technical cooperation.
