The defence in the Preliminary Inquiry into the charges of treason against Phillip Bynoe and Mark Benschop has begun making no-case submissions following the prosecution's completion of its case.
The lead counsel for Benschop's defence, Basil Williams, for over two and a half hours yesterday made submissions to the presiding magistrate, Chandra Sohan, who is to determine whether Benschop should be committed to stand trial in the High Court.
This was after the prosecution closed its case last Wednesday following the unavailability of its remaining witnesses, though it has sought leave from the magistrate to reserve the testimony of these witnesses should the matter be transferred to the High Court.
The no-case submissions are to continue today.
