A skills training centre which was commissioned last weekend at Mapletown, Aroaima, in Region Ten (Upper Demerara/Berbice) will offer courses in art, craft and cookery to gear the region’s women for self-employment.
The householders of Aroaima Mining Company who reside in Mapletown as well as the neighbouring environs of Hururu, Ladersville and the wider Region Ten are expected to benefit from the training facility, the Government Information Agency reported Monday.
The modest building has been outfitted by the Aroaima Bauxite Company (ABC) and was designed to house a library, a work area for art and craft training, and a kitchen for cookery and cake decoration, GINA stated.
The training facility was initiated by the Community Development Council of Aroaima.
At the commissioning ceremony, National Director of Community Development Councils, Philomena Sahoye-Shury said that history had been created in the region with the opening of the centre, and she urged the community to involve its youths in the training that the centre will offer, GINA reported.
Guest speaker Prime Minister Sam Hinds expressed pleasure over the initiative which he described as a step towards diversifying activities in the region.
At the time he was in the region on a three-day visit to the Berbice mining operations at Kwakwani and Aroaima, GINA said.
