Amateur boxing to get shot in arm

Local amateur boxing will get a much needed shot in the arm when two officials of the United States Amateur Boxing Association arrive in Guyana on Tuesday to conduct a four-day workshop in Linden.
Mike and Mercedes Rosario will be the guest of the of the Upper Demerara Amateur Boxing Association and will conduct sessions for referees, judges, time keepers and weight masters.
The workshops were organised by Dr. Michael Carryl the CEO of the Carryl Boxing Gym in Linden. Carrly, who resides in the Maryland, USA is a boxing official and enthusiast.
According to Roy Marshall, the vice president of UDABA, the workshops were arranged to update local officials with the latest rules governing international amateur boxing.
Marshall said that the workshops will benefit not only Linden but the entire Guyana. The workshop, which commences on Tuesday, will be held entirely in Linden at the Guyana Mines and Metal Workers Union hall in Wismar Street.
Mike Rosario is currently the chief official for the New York State Metro area, chief official and clinician of the US Women's North Eastern Region and an official of the International Amateur Boxing Association.
Rosario's last appointment allows him to officiate at the Olympic Games, the pinnacle in the amateur division. Mercedes Rosario is the secretary and registration chair person and the USABA computer technician.
The Guyana Amateur Boxing Association has been notified and has given its blessings. GABA president K Juman Yassin gave this confirmation yesterday and declared that the workshops will assist in the development of the sport here.
"What they (the Rosarios) are coming here to do is for the betterment of boxing," Yassin said. He declared that GABA would like to send participants to the workshops.
The workshop will culminate with a fight night for Under-16 boxers on November 16 at the Christianburg Hard Court in Wismar beginning at 6 p.m.
The Young Lions Gym will represent Linden while The Forgotten Youth Foundation and the Young Achievers Gym are the two representatives from Georgetown.
The minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Gail Teixeira and the Mayor of Linden Stan Smith have been invited to attend the launching.
