World Boxing Council cruiserweight champion Wayne Braithwaite will be honoured in the village of Plaisance tomorrow afternoon.
Braithwaite, who hails from Plaisance, will be the honoured guest at a congratulatory ceremony organised by and to be hosted by the Plaisance Action Committee.
A member of the Plaisance Action Committee, Basil Bradshaw, former sports editor of the Guyana Broadcasting Corporation, told Stabroek Sports yesterday that the decision to honour Braithwaite was made by the committee in recognition of his outstanding achievement.
Braithwaite won the vacant WBC cruiserweight title when he defeated Italian Salvatore Cantatore last month in Switzerland with the referee stopping the fight to save a defenceless Cantatore from further punishment. Bradshaw said a motorcade has been arranged. The motorcade will leave the Ocean View International Hotel at 2.30p.m. tomorrow, proceed on a route around Plaisance, and end at the Plaisance Market square where an official programme will commence at 4:00p.m.
A gold chain and pendant, the pendant being in the form of a pair of boxing gloves, will be one of the more tangible rewards Braithwaite will receive, Bradshaw disclosed.
Guyana's other current world champion Vivian Harris, who won the World Boxing Association and International Boxing Association junior welterweight belts eight days after Braithwaite, has also been invited, Bradhsaw said. A number of dignitaries are expected to grace the occasion with their presence.
Opposition Leader Hugh Desmond Hoyte, Chancellor of the Judiciary, Desiree Bernard and former Attorney General, Bernard Dos Santos who are both from Plaisance and the Minister of Sports have been invited among others.
