US boxing officials to hold workshop

Two officials from the United States Amateur Boxing Association are scheduled to arrive in Guyana this morning to conduct a series of workshops to help improve amateur boxing in the mining town of Linden.
Mike and Mercedes Rosario are expected to hold the first workshop this afternoon at the Guyana Mines and Metal Workers Union Hall in Wismar Street. The two are guest of the Upper Demerara Amateur Boxing Association.
The Rosarios will conduct sessions for referees, judges, time keepers and weight masters. Vice president of the UDABA Roy Marshall told Stabroek Sport yesterday that all persons interested in widening their knowledge of the sport are welcome to attend the workshops.
Mike Rosario is currently the chief official for the New York State Metro area, chief official and clinician of the USA Women’s North Eastern Region and an official of the International Amateur Boxing Association which allows him to officiate at the Olympics.
Sebert Blake, a coach attached to the Forgotten Youth Foundation is one of the coaches from Georgetown who will attend the workshops which was organised by Dr. Michael Carryl the CEO of Carryl Boxing Gym in Linden.
A launching and press conference has been planned for 11 am Thursday at the GMMWU hall. Mayor of Linden Stan Smith and Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Gail Tiexeira were invited to attend the launching.
The workshop will culminate with a fight card for under-16 boxers on Saturday at the Christianburg Hardcourt beginning at 6 pm.
The Forgotten Youth Foundation, the brainchild of Keith Bazilio and the Young Achievers Gym, will represent Georgetown while Young Lions is the lone gym from Linden.
