The army’s support for the police in the fight against crime will continue said President Bharrat Jagdeo yesterday in his address to newly commissioned Guyana Defence Force Officers.
Jagdeo who was attending the commissioning parade of the Standard Officers Course (SOC) #35 and the Reserve Officers Course (ROC) #13 at Camp Ayanganna said the crime wave was threatening social peace in the country and hindering efforts to promote the economy and foster development in Guyana.
He said “recently we have been faced with crime in new dimensions, in newer guises and all the more deadly” and peace must be preserved by the army and law enforcement agencies.
Jagdeo said the government would spare no resource, to equip and prepare the army and police, to tackle and overcome the problem.
He pledged the continued support of the army in the fight against crime and maintained that its participation in local law enforcement is constitutional and moreover that citizens were supportive of this venture.
He said over two thirds of the citizenry consulted during the recently concluded National Consultations on Crime were supportive of military law enforcement, and further, that this margin had called for even greater involvement by the army in this regard.
