Attorneys involved in the Preliminary Inquiry into the charges of treason against Phillip Bynoe and Mark Benschop have been asked by Chief Justice Carl Singh to desist from speaking about the case on television.
This follows television appearances by attorneys for the defence on the `At Home with Roger' and `Wake Up Guyana' programmes and attorneys for the prosecution on GTV's `Close up' programme.
Stabroek News understands that the Chief Justice reminded the attorneys on both sides to act responsibly and asked them not to discuss the case on television while the matter is sub judice.
At the hearing last Wednesday presiding Magistrate Chandra Sohan expressed disappointment with the attorneys' actions, which he described as contemptuous.
The Preliminary Inquiry is to determine whether Benschop should be committed to stand trial in the High Court.
After a week of deliberating, Sohan at the last hearing announced that he would need more time to render a decision on the no-case submissions of the defence. He is expected to deliver his decision on Thursday.
