On November 17, Lucille and Carlos Bacchus along with members and supporters of Mothers in Black, painted a school zebra crossing at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara. This was in remembrance of Wally (17) and his sister Fareena (16) who were killed six years ago by a drunken driver on the East Coast road.

A release from the association stated that their two-and-a-half- year quest for the enforcement of the present traffic laws and the introduction of new road safety legislation is an ongoing effort.

The organisations stated that while the introduction of the mandatory use of seatbelts as of January 2003 marked a small victory, there were still questions about when other recommendations such as radar traps and breathalysers would be implemented.

The organisation also noted that while the carnage on the roads continues, road fatalities and crashes have taken a back seat to the present crime crisis. An appeal was also extended for the reduction of speed during and after the festive season.
