Guyana's men's and women's squash teams advanced to the semi-final round of the 19th Central American and Caribbean Games, with 2-1 victories over their counterparts from Guatemala and Colombia respectively, yesterday in El Salvador.
According to Chef de Mission of the local team, Garfield Wiltshire, Shawn Badrinauth and Luke Fraser both scored 3-2 wins over J. M. Martinez and Diego Asturias respectively, while the other local team member, Maxim Weithers, and his opponent from Guatemala, J. Martinez, came to an agreement that the result of their match was insignificant since Guyana had already won.
The Games' website however had Guyana winning by a 2-1 margin.
Wiltshire explained that Weithers decided not to play the match since he wanted to rest for the crucial semi-final round against Mexico last evening.
In the women's team competition, Kathy Shuffler lost by a 1-3 margin to Silvia Angulo Rugeles, while Nicolette Fernandes and Jillian Griffith-Lilico both won their matches by 3-0 margins against Tamayo Restrepo and Mariana De Reyes respectively.
Last evening, the local ladies were down to face Mexico who defeated them by a 3-0 margin in the group preliminaries over the weekend.
In track and field Nyota Peters placed fourth in the women's long jump with a leap of 5.80 metres. Puerto Rico's Yesenia Rivera with a leap of 6.33 metres won the gold, while the silver medal went to Venezuela's Aruela Padrin (6.30).
Peters will commence her quest for honours in the heptalton tomorrow.
In table tennis, Guyana's Godrey Munroe was beaten 4-1 in the round of 32, by Barbados' Trevor Farley who is also the Caribbean men's champion.
Wiltshire said Munroe won two group matches and lost one, thus advancing to the round of 32 where he lost.
