USAID corrects emigration figure in remittances report

The USAID mission to Guyana has apologised for an error in a recent draft report on remittances to Guyana which had said that some 50,000 Guyanese were expected to emigrate during 2002.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) mission director, Dr Mike Sarhan said such a figure was clearly wrong as it would mean that there would be no one left in Guyana in the next ten years.
The release quoted Dr Sarhan as saying that on checking, the author of the report, immigration specialist Dr Manuel Orozco said that it was a typographical error "as he was unable to obtain an accurate figure that could be substantiated."
Expressing regret for any embarrassment caused, Dr Sarhan noted that it was unfortunate that the error in the draft was not spotted and that the incorrect figure was recently quoted in the international press.
The correction has since been made in a corrected version of the report which is now available at the Guyana Economic Opportunities (GEO) Project Office at Earl's Avenue, Subryanville or a copy can be requested by telephone at 223-7144.
