Mayor of Georgetown Hamilton Green expressed deep regret at the passing of Opposition Leader Desmond Hoyte yesterday.
In a statement to the media, Green extended sympathy on behalf of himself and his wife to the wife and close family members of the late People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R) leader.
“Death is the pathway we must tread - it leads us to eternity, and to enjoy the ultimate grace of God,” Green said.
The mayor’s statement described Hoyte’s death as a “sort of personal expurgation.” Green said that early last week he felt a “very great urge to communicate with Mr Hoyte. It was a dynamic spiritual feeling.” Thereafter, Green said he immediately sent off sincere Christmas greetings to Hoyte and his wife, Joyce and later recorded the following message with the Opposition Leader in mind...
“This Christmas, with sincerity, I have sent Christmas Greetings to those who have wronged me, and done me great harm and injustice.
I seek forgiveness and therefore, must be able to forgive, how else can we lead our society to love and reconciliation through atonement?
I urge you to try this method.
If we all made the effort, it can transform us, and take us from pain to peace.”
Hoyte and Green had fallen out in 1994 after Hoyte had him expelled from the PNC for indiscipline.
