Greene cops AAA’s Athlete of the Year award

Track athlete Rawle Greene who was voted the Amateur Athletic Association of Guyana (AAA) `Senior Athlete of the Year’, has his eyes set on representing Guyana at the World Championships in France.
Speaking to Stabroek Sport recently, Greene who won the ‘Senior Athlete of the Year’ title last year, said, among his plans for next year are; qualifying for the World Championships slated for France during the month of August.
The qualifying time for the 100-metre is 10.23 seconds for `A’ Class athletes and 10.35 seconds for `B’ Class athletes.
The 26-year-old Greene is looking forward to participating at the Hampton Games
(Trinidad), the Whitsuntide Games (Grenada), the Central American and Caribbean Track and Field Championships and the South American Games, and hopes that he will make the qualifying time for the World Championships.
According to the Bedford All Stars Track and Field Club member, his preparation for the World Championships started in September of this year. His training programme includes three days at the Gym, where he does weight training, one day at the swim pool and three days at the track.
He is however hoping that he can land sponsorship to attend the various meets, and is looking forward to the business community to come forward and support him.
Greene who was voted runner-up senior athlete for the year 1998, joined Bedford All Stars one year ago, and according to him, is being given more attention than when he was a member of the Royal Youth Movement Track and Field Club. Greene said since joining Bedford, his times has improved tremendously.
He started his career in 1992 and represented Guyana at the Inter-Guiana Games in 1995 where he won the 100-meter and was second in the 200-mertre. Among his achievements this year are winning the 100-metre at the national championship, along with the 200-metre at the Kashif and Shanghai Games in Linden. At the latter, Greene placed third in the 200-metre.
Greene also placed third in the 100-metre at the Southern Games in Trinidad and Tobago, and was fourth in the 200-metre.
At the Whitsuntide Games in Grenada, Greene was second in the 100-metre and fourth in the 200-metre.
He sustained an injury during the heats at the Barry Massey Games and withdrew.
His best time for the year in the 100-metre is 10.2 seconds and 21 seconds flat for the 200-metre. His best time overall for the 100-metre is 10.49 seconds which he clocked (electronic) in Brazil last year at the Senior South American Games. In Grenada, he clocked 10.1 seconds (hand time) at the Whitsuntide Games.
Greene said he needs to do some correction to his bio-mechanics and is working feverishly on it.
