Christopher, Richards win Nigel’s T/Tennis titles

Sydney Christopher and Bertnell Richards won the men’s and women’s categories respectively, of the Nigel’s Supermarket sponsored, Top 16-men, Top Eight Women Table Tennis Tournament on Sunday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Christopher defeated Matthew Khan 4-2 in the men’s final while Richards edged Jody Ann Blake 4-3 in the ladies final.
According to a release from the organisers, Christopher beat Khan 11-9, 11-9, 7-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-8, while Richards beat Blake 5-11, 11-8, 12-10, 9-11, 11-3, 9-11, 11-9.
Christopher reached the final by disposing of Donald Duff 11-5, 11-4, 11-3, 11-6, while Khan gained a walk over from Godfrey Munroe.
Richards on the other hand beat Desiree Lancaster 11-6, 11-13, 11-4, 11-8, 12-10. Blake disposed of Michelle John 12-10, 11-9, 11-9, 11-4 to reach the ladies final.
Nigel’s Supermarket’s marketing manager, Mr. Roache who was on hand to declare the tournament open on Saturday morning, in a short address, said his company was pleased to be the sponsor of the tournament, and has always had an interest in sports, and for the second time in as much years, taken the initiative in being the sole sponsor of the tournament.
The presentation of cash incentives was done immediately after the finals on Sunday.
Guyana Table Tennis Association’s committee member Darren Torrington moved the vote of thanks on behalf of the association.
Meanwhile, Morton Blake won both the over-35 and over-40 categories of a specially arranged Masters Tournament on Sunday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Blake defeated Michael Vieira in both categories.
In the over-35 age group, Blake won by 11-6, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8, and in the over-40 category, he defeated Vieira 11-4, 11-7, 11-9.
Vieira however won the over-50 age group by defeating Munniram Persaud 11-5, 11-4, 11-3.
Xen Goliah beat Joel Wilburg 11-4, 11-2, 9-11, 10-12, 13-11 to place third in the over-35 age group, and 4-11, 11-3, 11-3, 8-11, 11-7 for third in the over-40 age group.
Baksh Jewellery and Hugo Curtis among others, contributed to the Masters tournament.
