Chanderpaul named cricketer of the year

West Indies left handed batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul will be named cricketer of the year at the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) annual awards ceremony which will be held on Friday evening at the Umana Yana.
According to a GCB press release, Chanderpaul who turned in outstanding performances both at the international and regional levels this year, will also receive the award for the batsman of the year.
West Indies leg spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo who broke the record for most wickets in a regional first class season this year, has been named the bowler of the year.
National and Malteenoes batsman Lennox Cush who scored back to back centuries in this year's regional first class competition will take the award for the most improved player.
Berbice division one team Young Warriors who won two one day competitions and a three-day first division title this year will be named the team of the year. The Cumberland Canjie side are also in the finals of the Banks Beer three-day competition.
The GCB will also present awards to individuals and companies who have given support to the organization over the years.
During Friday's ceremony, Chris Dehring, chief executive Officer of the West Indies Cricket Board 2007 cricket World Cup committee will talk about the opportunities and challenges for countries bidding to be venues for the tournament.
Sports Minister Gail Texeira will make some remarks while GCB's president Chetram Singh will review the 2002 year in cricket in Guyana.
All invited guest are asked to be seated by 7:15 pm.
