West Indies made a record-breaking score to win the final Test of the series and thwart Australia's hopes of a Caribbean whitewash.

In successfully reaching a target of 418, the home batsmen set a new mark for the most successful fourth innings total in Tests, topping India's 406-4 in Port of Spain 27 years ago.

Australia's hopes of thwarting the dramatic comeback took an upturn in the fourth over of the day, when Brett Lee dismissed key man Shivnarine Chanderpaul with 46 runs still needed.

But Omari Banks and Vasbert Drakes combined in an unbeaten partnership of 46 to clinch victory 40 minutes before lunch.

Banks, 38 not out overnight, was denied a maiden Test half-century by the aggressive Drakes, who struck 27 from 47 balls.

Chanderpaul had added just a single to his overnight 103 when he pushed at a full-pitched ball from Lee that nipped away from him, Adam Gilchrist collecting behind the stumps.

Much of Australia's bowling was short and hostile, with a spread field waiting for the miscued hook or pull.

Stuart MacGill was employed with 27 runs needed. Drakes responded by slogging the leg-spinner over the roof of the stand at midwicket before surviving two strong lbw appeals.

Amazingly, Glenn McGrath was kept out of the attack until the pair had drawn within 10 runs of victory.

And Drakes completed an historic victory, cutting four square of the wicket as the partisan crowd went wild with delight.
