This facility is part of the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Guyana Marine Turtle Conservation Society and the National Parks Commission to collaborate on environmental education and awareness.
Secretary of the Guyana Marine Turtle Conservation Society, Ms. Annette Arjoon, said after the MOU was signed, one of the first activities being done "is to put up this building which would be like a Conservation Museum where the general public would be exposed to marine and environmental information in the form of brochures and handouts and where they would have free access to various artifacts, including items washed up on the Shell Beach area."
According to Arjoon, the Guyana Marine Turtle Conservation Society and the National Parks Commission would basically work together to achieve the same goal which is environmental education and awareness.
Arjoon and Manager of the Zoo, Mr. Peter Khatoo were among others who took part in the ceremonial 'breaking of ground' Wednesday morning at the site where the building would be erected.
The 'museum' is expected to be completed by March 31, and according to Arjoon, it would cost about US$10,000.
Kathoo told the Chronicle he is glad that this facility would be built in the Zoological Park since it would not only enhance the appearance at the front of the zoo, but will give visitors to the park an additional opportunity to be educated on Turtle Conservation and other aspects of marine life.
