PORT of Spain, Trinidad - West Indies batting star Brian Lara has congratulated the regional selectors for the 15-man-squad selected for next month’s 2003 World Cup in South Africa, Kenya and Zimbabwe.

The left-handed batting genius was speaking to reporters at the end of a two-week training camp and the second limited overs practice match at Stanford Cricket Ground in Antigua.

Lara returned to competitive action earlier this month in the annual Gerry Gomez North/ South Classic at the Queen’s Park Oval, and he quickly asserted himself with a match-winning knock of 71 for the North team. He said that the Sir Vivian Richards-led selection committee did an excellent job at arriving at the West Indies World Cup 15.

The world’s double record holder was sidelined with a ‘mystery’ illness he contracted in September last year in Sri Lanka during the ICC Champions trophy tournament.

He subsequently missed out on the West Indies team’s Test and One-day series in India and Bangladesh.

“I think we are sending the best possible team to the World Cup, congrats to the selectors, and it is now up to the players to go out and win it,” Lara said.

The former West Indies captain who will be participating in his third World Cup said that the regional side is blessed with many talented players and match-winners.

“We have got now a lot of match-winners. In the past we were lacking winners and sort of played in and around a couple of players. Now we have guys playing bold cricket, exciting cricket.

The 33-year-old, who holds the highest individual score in First-Class and Test cricket, said the composition of the regional team is highly talented and experienced.

“The team now looks like a team that has a few stars and if we play as a team, it is going to be very good, “ Lara stated.

He said that he does not think the exclusion of a specialist spinner will work against the team.

The Carl Hooper-led West Indies team left for South Africa via Bridgetown, Barbados, on Tuesday. They will play against hosts South Africa in the opening match of the series on February 9.
