MISS Guyana Universe 2003, Leanna Damond received a symbolic key to her hometown New Amsterdam on Thursday after paying a courtesy call on the Mayor and Town Council of the township.
Dark clouds and intermittent showers did not deter the thousands from all walks of life who lined the streets to catch a glimpse and pay homage to the Queen.

Schoolchildren waved their flags, as public and private sector workers took leave from their busy schedules to capture the moment of being in the presence of a local `monarch', who was at times transported in a specially decorated open-back lorry. At other times, she chose to walk so as to give a wave, a hug or just shake hands with well wishers.

At the New Amsterdam Town Hall, Mr. Norman Semple, Public Relations Officer of the Berbice Chamber of Commerce and Development Association, described it as a "red letter day" for the township.

He noted that the achievement of Leanna is just a stepping stone for more success and encouraged New Amsterdamers to emulate her.

At a cocktail reception, which began with a prayer, the University of Guyana student was serenaded by her friends, who reminded her of divine help in her success.

Shaune Samuels sang 'Lord we give you thanks for the way you held her hand', while Alicia Millington preferred the song 'I am so blessed, you will never know' and another performed, 'You're my hero'.

Deputy Mayor, Ms. Hyacinth James, who made the presentation of the golden key to the Queen, congratulated Leanna on her achievement and expressed support towards her preparations for the Miss Universe Pageant to be held in Panama in May.

Leanna, in her response, expressed gratitude for the support which she described as overwhelming and promised to make not just the nation, but her township proud. - (JEUNE BAILEY VAN-KERIC)
