Discussions between the government and the People’s National Congress/Reform (PNC/R) are ongoing to arrive at a mutually acceptable agenda and to make arrangements for a meeting between President Bharrat Jagdeo and Leader of the Opposition PNC/R, Robert Corbin.

Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr. Roger Luncheon, at a press briefing last Wednesday said Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Reepu Daman Persaud and PNC/R’s Chief Whip, Lance Carberry, are continuing their discussions, but declined from saying how soon the meeting between the President and Mr. Corbin would take place. He however, emphasised that in addition to the present political initiatives there must be a parliamentary re-focus.

“The Office of the President views with some expectations those developments that surround the post-motion (PNC/R’s recent Parliamentary Motion) period. The Office of the President wishes to reiterate that a Parliamentary re-focus must complement the other political initiatives currently being undertaken. Importantly, then the matter of an appointment of the Leader of the Opposition becomes most relevant and timely. And the ball is in Mr. Corbin’s court. Meanwhile, ongoing contacts between the Office of the President and the PNC/R have continued with the expressed aim of finalising arrangements for the agreed upon meeting between President Jagdeo and the PNC/R Leader, Mr. Robert Corbin,” Dr. Luncheon reported.

Upon his election as Leader of the PNC/R, Mr. Corbin indicated that he is willing to engage in constructive discussions with President Jagdeo. Against this background Persaud and Carberry have been holding discussions to facilitate the arrangements for the anticipated meeting between the President and Mr. Corbin. (C Naipaul)
