PRESIDENT of the University of Guyana Student Society (UGSS) Mr. Robert Bourne has refuted an article published in Guyana Chronicle on March 6, 2003 entitled, `UG Community Silent Over Shooting Of Student’.

According to Mr. Bourne, before the article was published, he had already publicly condemned the shooting of Maria Sharma and the kidnapping of her husband Dev Sharma, and it was carried on television programme `News Update’ on Thursday evening.

He said that at the Cenotaph, he openly condemned the criminals for their brutal attack and announced that a delegation was visiting Maria Sharma in hospital.

Maria Sharma is a student of the University of Guyana, pursuing post-graduate studies in the Faculty of Social Sciences, while her husband a former student of that institution is the Director of the Georgetown Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Mr. Bourne said that the immediate focus of the UGSS is “justice for Yohance Douglas and putting an end to extra-judicial killings in Guyana”

The UGSS President also noted that crime in Guyana has had a traumatic effect from the youngest and oldest and issued a call for all social partners to condemn the recent shooting of Maria Sharma and the kidnapping of her husband.

Mr. Sharma subsequently escaped from Buxton Thursday morning and is resting at an undisclosed location. Mrs. Sharma is said to be in a serious condition at the Georgetown Hospital.
