CARIBBEAN Muslims have concluded an historic accord in the promotion of religious, cultural, economic and educational cooperation.

According to a release from the Muslim Youth League (MYL) of Guyana, such areas of cooperation already existed between Muslims of Guyana and Suriname. The new accord includes Muslims of Trinidad and Tobago.

The release said Muslim leaders from the three countries met in Guyana over the last weekend when they discussed several matters and arrived at a consensus.

Messrs. Shabir Hussain, of the MYL, Haji Djameel Ashruf and Djamia Aleemiya Farrediyya of Suriname and Al-Haj Yacoob Ally of Trinidad and Tobago represented their respective organisations during the discussions.

The historic accord was formalised with the presentation of official plaques last Sunday to the respected Caribbean Islamic Scholar, Al Haj Kamaludeen Ghanny of Trinidad and Tobago. The scholar was a special guest for the New Year programme, the release said.

The Muslim leaders had gathered here for the Sixth Annual Cultural Programme marking the commencement of the Islamic New Year 1424/2003 at the Akbar Hussain Lecture Hall of the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex, West Coast Demerara.
